From the publisher:
Ralph Nykvist is considered one of Sweden’s most well-known photographers. However, historical accounts have often overlooked his significant contributions as a writer. In this extensive volume, Nykvist’s personal columns and insightful conversations with world-renowned photographers — such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and William Klein — are republished from the magazine Aktuell Fotografi, spanning the years 1972–1993. The book also contains over three hundred images, several of which are Ralph Nykvist’s own photographs shown here for the first time.
Within the profession, Ralph is referred to as “the photographers’ photographer” — a title rooted in the idea that his work is especially appealing to other photographers. But if one takes the time to delve into Nykvist’s books, and looks beyond form and composition, philosophical reflections often emerge. Metaphors and symbolism lie latent.
The book is dominated by the quiet, poetic expression with deep resonance and subtle humor that is associated with Ralph Nykvist. Photography captured at exactly the right moment with impressionistic sensitivity. Or, as he himself put it: “It’s the shadows that hold the secret.” That Ralph Nykvist’s photography is seen as solitary and nonpartisan does not mean he lacks opinions. He reserved his viewpoints and personal perspectives for his articles. And as a true artist, he had the courage to question the established direction: “The images contain no life. Imagination and empathy are dead — and the deadest of all are the photographers,” he wrote about the documentary trends in the orthodox photographic ideals of 1970s Sweden in his recurring column Wide Angle.
The book focuses on the years between 1972 and 1993, when Ralph was part of the circle around Aktuell Fotografi, a platform that played a major role in the development of photography in Sweden. In his articles, he presented his own photographic approach and brought the wider world a little closer. He reported from international photography events and festivals — such as the Rencontres internationales de la photographie d’Arles in Arles, France — long before the festival became one of the world’s most prestigious. And it’s impossible to ignore that this material has become a historical record that, in hindsight, broadens one’s perspective.
The book is compiled by Thomas H. Johnsson, Karin Strandberg, and Christer Strandberg. Karin and Christer Strandberg also designed the book.
