Julia Peirone: Braids and Bruises

Will the real person please stand up. From girls to elderly women – as in her new series “Butterflies” : In Julia Peirone's intensely naked portraits we find an exploration what lies behind the the surface (vulnerability) but also a way to challenge the viewer's perception and expectation of what photography should offer. The subject / person's real self is often revelead in the off moment. In her still lifes, we find dead, wilted flowers and scrunchies with a few strands of hair.


A mid-career retrospective with ca 60 works

Julia Peirone has been interested in the photographic image and what it can be since her breakthrough in the 1990s. She does not work autobiographically, but there is still a unified narrative in her work, a nerve of experience that allows the works to open up to our eyes. The images have a pressure, a weight, which is rooted in a complex personality that wants to formulate something central about life.
Peirone's photographs and films usually feature young people, but in recent years older actors have also taken the stage. Regardless of age, everything takes place at an intersection, in the zone between being a child, an adult and an old person. In this intersection there is both pain and opportunity. In these images of total presence and vulnerability, we see a frozen time. It is both brittle, painful and sad.
Peirone's talent lies in her ability to capture the very hundredth of a second when the model's movements and facial expressions are totally unguarded. It is when the model is completely inside herself, at the mercy of her world, that physical contact is made with all our longings, our arrogance and our own existential nakedness. We see our own metamorphosis.
Julia Peirone was born in 1973 in Argentina, grew up in Lund and works in Stockholm.

Julia Peirone har sedan genombrottet på 90-talet varit intresserad av den fotografiska bilden och vad den kan vara. Hon arbetar inte självbiografiskt, men i hennes verk finns ändå en enhetlig berättelse, en nerv av erfarenhet som gör att verken öppnar sig för våra ögon. Bilderna har tryck, en pondus, som bott­nar i en komplex personlighet som vill formulera något centralt om livet.
I Peirones fotografier och filmer förekommer oftast ungdomar, men under senare år har även äldre aktörer intagit scenen. Oavsett ålder är det i en skärningspunkt som allt utspelar sig, i zonen mellan att vara barn, vuxen och åldrad. I denna gränstrakt finns både smärta och möjligheter. I dessa bilder av total närvaro och utsatthet ser vi en frusen tid. Det är både sprött, plågsamt och vemodigt.
Peirones begåvning ligger i hennes förmåga att fånga just den hundradels sekund då modellen i rörelse och mimik är totalt skyddslös. Då när modellen är helt inne i sitt eget, utlämnad i sin värld, uppstår fysisk kontakt med allas vår längtan, vårt övermod och vår egen existentiella nakenhet. Vi ser vår egen metamorfos.
