"Chemigrams" collects a rich selection of photographer Åke E:son Lindman's cameraless works. By searching for the basic elements of the photographic process – chemistry, photographic paper and light – he has created image worlds that set the imagination in motion. Although they don't depict anything specific, the chemigrams conjure up images of rolling landscapes, mountains, lakes, vegetation and underwater worlds, but it's also like peering into the tissues and cell structures of the body viewed through a microscope. The images are a combination of the impact of chance and a deep familiarity with the photochemical process and how the material reacts. The material's own properties are also very important. Åke has used a variety of different and often expired photo papers. Their different qualities – thickness, gloss and tonality – visibly affect the expression and mood of the images. For that reason, the image reproduction is of utmost importance and the book is printed at the unique Narayana Press in Denmark. Petter Antonisen is responsible for the design, and the book has a text about the importance of the darkroom by landscape architect Thorbjörn Andersson, as well as a conversation between Åke E:son Lindman and Niclas Östlind that deals with practical knowledge, photography and the desire to create chemigrams.
