Cockfighting, a bloody tradition brought to South America by Spanish conquistadors, is disappearing from the continent. Opposition is growning as animal rights movements gain more influence. Several countries have already banned the sport altogether.

A sport and tradition that arouses mixed feelings, disgust and at the same time a fight that symbolizes courage, discipline and hierarchy. For some, a way out of poverty, for others, an industry.

Photographer and filmmaker Ricard Estay got to see a part of this world through a childhood friend, Cockfighter Democrito Pacheco. Peru may be one of the last outpost av of this colonial remnant.

Only time will tell.

Tierra de Pájaros Las peleas de gallos, una sangrienta tradición traída a Sudamérica por los conquistadores españoles, están desapareciendo del continente. La oposición crece a medida que los movimientos por los derechos de los animales ganan más influencia. Varios países ya han prohibido el deporte por completo. Un deporte y una tradición que suscita sentimientos mixtas, repulsión y, al mismo tiempo, una lucha que simboliza valentía, disciplina y jerarquía.
