Björn Abelin: One Day

A portrait of Sweden today seen through ten places -  Lillhärdal, Malmberget, Morokulien, Skurup, Sommen, Slussen/Stockholm, Sveg, Svappavaara, Tanum and Tyresta.

From the photographer:
It started as a game to get over a slump in my creativity. I asked a number of friends and acquaintances where they would like to send me as a photographer within the borders of Sweden. I set up a number of rules, such as that I would not stay there longer than 2-3 nights and preferably not have visited the place before and not prepare myself for photography. Chance and letting go of control were the main rules. Of course, I broke some of the rules.

However, all the pictures are taken within the borders of Sweden. The project developed and changed based on the places I visited and the thoughts that emerged. More and more I understood that this was about a Sweden in change, bigger than I previously understood. Maybe it started earlier, maybe already when Olof Palme was shot in the street. Gradually and for better or worse, we have lost our idea of Sweden as a pioneering country and a safe country. Globalization and capitalism are two factors that have changed the political climate.

The media increasingly focused on the climate and our ability or inability to act according to given facts. The political conversation became tougher, solidarity and the sense of "we" became weaker and weaker. It starts as a sign or a feeling but develops into something that is difficult to control correctly. We see effects today of increased violence, climate denial, etc..

Det började som en lek för att komma över en svacka i min kreativitet. Jag bad ett antal vänner och bekanta vart de skulle vilja skicka mig som fotograf inom Sveriges gränser. Jag satte upp ett antal regler som t.ex. jag skulle inte stanna där längre än 2-3 nätter och helst inte besökt platsen tidigare och heller inte förbereda mig inför fotografering. Slumpen och att släppa kontrollen var huvudregler. En del av reglerna bröt jag såklart emot.

Dock är alla bilder tagna inom Sveriges gränser. Projektet utvecklades och förändrades utifrån de platser jag besökte och de tankar som växte fram. Mer och mer förstod jag att detta handlade om ett Sverige i förändring, större än jag tidigare förstod. Kanske startade det tidigare, kanske redan när Olof Palme blev skjuten på öppen gata. Successivt och på gott och ont har vi förlorat vår idé om Sverige som föregångsland och ett tryggt land. Globalisering och kapitalism är två faktorer som gjort att det politiska klimatet har förändrats.

I media kom mer och mer att handla om klimatet och vår förmåga eller oförmåga att handla enligt givna fakta. Det politiska samtalet blev hårdare, solidaritet och vi-känslan blev svagare och svagare. Det börjar som tecken eller en förnimmelse men utvecklas till något som är svårt att styra rätt. Vi ser effekter idag av ökat våld, klimatförnekelse mm.

Idag lever vi troligen mitt i apokalypsen och inte inför. Allt detta berörde mig djupt och gör fortfarande och som titeln antyder - vad är det vi lämnar efter oss till kommande generationer, våra barn.
