Give wood a second chance! Collecting the used, the diseased and discarded and transforming it to something new.
From the publisher:
Start from scrap is a publication about discarded wood and an exploration in how to extend its life. We want to give you a look into the process of making furniture out of two materials that many regard as waste – but in our minds, are far from it. Two materials with different characteristics but with equal beauty.
Demolition wood
Stuffed in orange Big Bags, it occupies the cityscape of most Swedish towns as a result of constant renovations to keep up with trends.
Elm wood
Century old trees that have been taken down due to the rapid spread of Dutch elm disease. Trees that residents have an emotional connection to and that could have been used to serve our growing need for locally sourced materials.
Both of these materials are categorised within Swedish society as biofuel at best, and mostly end up being burnt. In an act of desperation – and some say naivety – to save these materials, Contem was born. What started from a few scrapheap planks has grown into a small company manufacturing solid wood furniture, each piece a tiny step towards giving dead wood a second life.
