Leif Engström’s work is among the most intriguing and important in a new generation of Swedish painters.

Leif Engström's poetic painting captures the mystical qualities of the suburban landscape as well as the dense forest. The works evoke a feeling of melancholy and wonder where the movements of light over city and nature play an important role. In close dialogue with art history, Engström sees himself as an urban explorer. Like a contemporary take on the impressionist flâneur, he finds inspiration in the surroundings of everyday life.

"The Night Leans Against the Balcony Door" is the first major monograph that collects and provides an overview of Engström's work. The book presents paintings from almost a decade, where the earliest works are from 2015 and the latest completely new works for his solo exhibition at Skellefteå konsthall autumn 2024.

About the artist: Leif Engström (born 1992 in Brunskog, Sweden) holds an MFA (2020) from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Engström has exhibited at Liljevalchs and Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm, Sandgrund, Karlstad, Arvika Konsthall and Rackstadmuseet, Arvika, Cecilia Hillström Gallery, Stockholm, Galleri Thomassen, Gothenburg, and Konstfrämjandet Bergslagen, Örebro. In 2023 Engström was awarded The Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s two-year working grant as well as The Edstrand Foundation award, and in 2021 he was awarded the Åke Andrén Foundation artist prize and the Marianne & Sigvard Bernadotte artist scholarship. Engström is represented in the collections of Moderna Museet, Stockholm Konst, Region Värmland, SAK, Arvika and Örebro Municipality and Ståhl Collection, Norrköping.

Leif Engströms poetiska måleri fångar förortslandskapets så väl som den täta skogens mystiska kvaliteter. Verken frammanar en känsla av melankoli och under där ljusets rörelser över stad och natur spelar en viktig roll. I nära dialog med konsthistorien ter sig Engström som en urban upptäcktsresande. Likt en samtida tappning av den impressionistiska flanören hittar han inspiration i vardagslivets omgivningar.

”Natten vilar mot balkongdörren” är den första stora monografin som samlar och ger en överblick av Engströms produktion. I boken presenteras målningar från ett knappt decennium, där de tidigaste verken är från 2015 och de senaste helt nya verk till hans solouställning på Skellefteå konsthall hösten 2024.

Leif Engström (1992, Brunskog) håller en masterexamen från Kungliga Konsthögskolan (2020). Engström har ställt ut på Nationalmuseum, Liljevalchs och Bonniers Konsthall i Stockholm, Skellefteå konsthall, Sandgrund i Karlstad, Arvika Konsthall och Rackstadmuseet i Arvika, Cecilia Hillström Gallery i Stockholm, Galleri Thomassen i Göteborg, samt på Konstfrämjandet Bergslagen i Örebro.
